the short version

A cite-and-refuse checker is a vendor demo checklist that tests whether a support AI links answers to real source pages and explicitly refuses when content cannot support the question. Support citations mean openable page links that actually carry the claim. Run it on any vendor in about ten minutes; Rinhelp is an optional next step.

I have watched demos where the bot answers a refund window that does not exist on the site, then attaches a vaguely related “source” link.

A cite-and-refuse checker is a vendor demo checklist that tests whether a support AI links answers to real source pages and explicitly refuses when content cannot support the question.

Support citations mean openable page links that actually carry the claim. On a miss, the bot refuses and offers a next step.

Run this on any vendor first. Rinhelp callouts come after.

Printable checklist (static tables)

Mark each row Pass / Partial / Fail in the tables below (or print). No live scoring backend on this marketing pass. No fake numerical “trust score™.” Sections score themselves.

Setup

#CheckPassPartialFail
1Point the bot at a known public page (docs / pricing / policy) you control or can open
2Prepare one in-corpus question the page clearly answers
3Prepare one out-of-corpus question the site cannot support (invent a fake policy detail)

Cite behavior

#CheckPassPartialFail
4Ask the in-corpus question — does the reply include a clickable link/title to the actual page used?
5Open the citation — does the page actually contain the claim?
6Ask a follow-up — does grounding still hold (still cited, still on-page)?

Refuse behavior

#CheckPassPartialFail
7Ask the out-of-corpus question — does it refuse / fallback instead of inventing?
8Does refusal offer a clear next step (rephrase / handoff) without fabricating policy?
9Repeat once — is refusal consistent?

Miss / inbox (if the product claims it)

#CheckPassPartialFail
10After a refuse, can the team see the missed question somewhere (miss pile / inbox)?

Scoring tip: Cite-only without refuse is half a promise. Refuse-only without openable citations is a quiet bot with no audit trail. You want both sections mostly Pass.

Demo script (copy-paste)

  1. In-corpus: “What is your return window?” (only if the returns page states it).
  2. Out-of-corpus: “Do you offer lifetime free returns on every SKU including final-sale items bought in 2019?” (or another detail you know the site does not publish).
  3. Near-miss follow-up: ask for a number or exception the page never states.

Why citation presence isn’t enough

Cosmetic sources are easy. Constrain the model to indexed pages, require a link on supported answers, and stop below a confidence bar — that is the harder promise.

  • Cite without refuse → always an answer + “sources”; may still invent.
  • Refuse without cite → often “I don’t know”; boundary without proof trail.
  • Neither → fluent guess; highest cleanup cost.

Refusal is the other half of trust. A confident wrong refund rule becomes a screenshot you have to honour.

How Rinhelp behaves (soft, true-today)

After you run the checklist on whoever you are evaluating:

  • Rinhelp answers from indexed pages with citations on supported replies
  • Below the confidence threshold it refuses instead of guessing
  • Unanswered threads are flagged in the shared inbox (miss pile)
  • Unresolved conversations are free per pricing

You just ran the same script; keep your own scores.

Install stays one script tag. Miss pile story: ai shared inbox miss pile.

FAQ

What is a cite + refuse checker?

A cite-and-refuse checker is a vendor demo checklist that tests whether a support AI links answers to real source pages and explicitly refuses when content cannot support the question. Support citations mean openable page links that actually carry the claim.

How do I test citations?

Ask an in-corpus question the page clearly answers. Require a clickable link to that page. Open it. Confirm the claim is actually there. Then ask a follow-up.

How do I test refusal?

Ask an out-of-corpus question the site cannot support. Expect a fallback / refuse — not an invented policy. Check that the next step (rephrase or handoff) does not smuggle in a fake rule. Repeat once for consistency.

Is this only for Rinhelp?

No. Run it on any vendor. Rinhelp is an optional next step after you have scores.

Do I need an account to use this checklist?

No. Print it or mark the tables above. Soft CTA to signup only if you want the product.

What is a confidence threshold in plain language?

A bar below which the agent must stop instead of guessing. Retrieve → score whether the best passage actually answers → generate only if it clears the bar; below the bar, fixed fallback.

Closing

Ten minutes. Three asks. Pass / Partial / Fail. Keep the scores. If you want the agent that is built around this promise: signup.

Start with the support questions your website can already answer.

Add your site, style the chat, and paste one line into your page. By the end of the afternoon you will know what your content already answers — and, from the flagged conversations, exactly what it is missing.
