In short
- Shopify Inbox is free and now has an AI that answers shoppers, but only in your store’s chat widget, and it can’t refund or cancel an order.
- Its App Store rating fell from 4.70 to 4.00 in the reviews written since July, from the 1,990 recent reviews we collected.
- For the same store, the alternatives cost from $49 to about $1,177 a month, and how a tool counts AI work decides most of that bill.
- Gorgias, Tidio, Richpanel and Intercom let their AI refund or cancel orders; Rinhelp and Zendesk make a teammate approve first.
Shopify Inbox is free, it sits in your Shopify admin, and since June it comes with an AI that answers shoppers for you. For a lot of stores that is enough. It stops being enough when email support piles up somewhere else, when two teammates answer the same customer, or when you want the AI to do more than say where an order is.
This guide compares eleven alternatives the way a store actually pays for them. We priced every tool for the same store, wrote out the arithmetic, and checked what each AI can do with an order and who has to approve it. Every price and rating was checked on 20 October 2026 and links to the page we read it on.
We make Rinhelp, one of the tools below. We’ve kept it to the same rules as the others, catches included, so you can check every figure yourself.
What Shopify Inbox does in 2026
Shopify Inbox is Shopify’s own chat tool. It’s free on the App Store, rated 4.6 from 5,811 reviews, and it works on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, according to Shopify’s help center.
The big change this year is the Inbox agent, which Shopify introduced in its Spring ’26 Edition as an “AI sales associate”. Once you turn it on, it:
- answers questions about your products, shipping, returns, sizing and store policies, using your catalog and policies (Shopify help center)
- recommends products and adds them to the cart
- checks the status of an order, after the shopper signs in to their customer account
- hands complex or sensitive chats to a teammate, and gives your store’s email address when nobody is available (conversations guide)
What it doesn’t do matters just as much:
- It only works in your store’s chat widget. Emails to your support address never become Inbox conversations.
- It can’t refund, cancel or edit an order. Shopify’s pages describe order status lookups only.
- It needs Shopify’s new customer accounts. Shopify says it “doesn’t work with legacy customer accounts”.
- No Messenger or Instagram. Shopify stopped supporting both in August 2023.
- No help center, and no rules for who answers what. A conversation is either open or closed, and you can assign it to one staff member.
Shopify also lets shoppers cancel an unfulfilled order themselves from the order status page now, which takes some “please cancel my order” chats off your plate without any help desk.
Its reviews fell after July
On 20 October 2026 we collected the newest 1,990 reviews of Shopify Inbox on the App Store, from January 2025 to 19 October 2026, and averaged them by month.
| Period | Reviews | Average | 1 or 2 stars |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 1,116 | 4.75 | 33 |
| January to June 2026 | 597 | 4.70 | 27 |
| July 2026 | 134 | 3.86 | 34 |
| August 2026 | 63 | 3.73 | 18 |
| September 2026 | 46 | 4.22 | 8 |
| 1 to 19 October 2026 | 34 | 4.74 | 1 |
From July to mid-October the average was 4.00, from 277 reviews, with 61 of them giving one or two stars. That’s more low ratings in three and a half months than in all of 2025.
The drop came right after the Inbox agent launched in June and a July change, reported by merchants in Shopify’s community forum, that asked shoppers to sign in before chatting with staff. Shopify later brought back an option to collect a name and email instead. October’s reviews are back to 4.74, so the worst may be over. The headline 4.6 on the listing still hides how rough the summer was.
When to stay on Shopify Inbox
Keep Shopify Inbox if all of these are true:
- Your customers reach you mostly through chat on your store, not email.
- One person answers, or your team rarely steps on each other.
- Most questions are about products, shipping and order status.
- Your store uses Shopify’s new customer accounts, so the AI can look up orders.
It costs nothing, and its AI covers the questions it was built for. Look elsewhere when email support lives in a separate inbox, when you need to know who owns which conversation, when you want a help center your AI answers from, or when you want the AI to start refunds and cancellations instead of handing every one to you.
The alternatives at a glance
To compare like with like, we priced every tool for one reference store:
- a Shopify store with a team of 3
- about 1,000 conversations a month, across chat and email
- the AI answers first in all 1,000, resolves 500, and hands 500 to the team
That’s roughly a store with 2,200 to 5,000 orders a month, if you use Gorgias’s benchmark of 20 to 46 tickets per 100 orders. A 50% AI resolution rate is close to the 45% that the median brand reaches in Gorgias’s own data. Prices are list prices in US dollars on monthly billing, on the cheapest plan that fits.
| Tool | Best for | How it bills | AI on orders | App Store rating | Reference store, a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Inbox | Chat-only stores | Free | Looks up, after sign-in | 4.6 (5,811) | $0 |
| Rinhelp | Small teams on chat and email | Flat, per workspace | Asks; a teammate approves | Not listed | $49 |
| Gorgias | Stores on every social channel | Per ticket, plus AI | Cancels and edits | 4.3 (706) | $840 to $1,015 |
| Tidio | Chat-first stores | Per conversation, plus AI | Refunds and cancels | 4.8 (1,356) | $829 |
| Chatty | Low budgets, chat and social | Per AI conversation | Tracking only | 4.9 (1,882) | $199 |
| Re:amaze | Teams that act on orders themselves | Per user, plus AI | Answers only | 4.4 (181) | $499 |
| Richpanel | Approval rules for AI | Per seat, plus AI | Refunds and cancels | 4.9 (137) | $467 to $557 |
| eDesk | Marketplace sellers | Per agent, plus AI | Through procedures | 4.7 (32) | $1,137 |
| Willdesk | Many small stores | Per conversation, plus AI | Cancels, edits address | 4.7 (380) | $290 to $350 |
| Help Scout | Email-heavy teams | Per user, plus AI | Answers only | 3.7 (19) | $450 to $464 |
| Zendesk | Voice and big app catalogs | Per agent, plus AI | Suggests; a teammate accepts | 3.2 (94) | $1,177 |
| Intercom | Phone, WhatsApp and SMS | Per seat, plus AI | Through procedures | 3.7 (18) | $612 to $1,107 |
Ratings are from each app’s Shopify App Store listing on 20 October 2026, with the number of reviews in brackets. The workings for every total are under each tool below.
Each alternative, priced
Rinhelp
Rinhelp is help desk software for small teams and their AI agents: one inbox for live chat and email, a help center, and Rin, a built-in AI that answers first.
Best for: small teams that want AI on every chat and email for one flat price, with a teammate approving anything that moves money.
How it bills: free for up to 3 teammates, with a one-time trial of 50 AI replies. Pro is $49 a month for the whole workspace and includes 5,000 AI replies. Every message Rin sends counts as one AI reply, a handoff included. A top-up of 5,000 more costs $49 and never expires.
Reference store: if Rin sends about 3 replies in each conversation it resolves and 2 in each one it hands off, that’s 500 × 3 + 500 × 2 = 2,500 AI replies, inside the 5,000 on Pro. $49 a month.
AI on orders: your team sees a customer’s Shopify orders next to the conversation. Rin shares an order only after a purchase check: the customer gives the order number and the email on it, and both must match. Rin and any AI agent you connect can ask for a refund or a cancellation, and it waits for a teammate to approve it. Cancellations only work on unfulfilled orders.
Rating: Rinhelp isn’t on the Shopify App Store. You connect your store with a small app you make in your own Shopify account, which takes a few minutes.
The catch: live chat and email only, with no phone, WhatsApp, SMS or social messages. Rin can’t refund or cancel anything on its own, by design. And because AI replies are counted per message, a store with long back-and-forth chats uses its 5,000 faster than one with quick answers.
Gorgias
Gorgias is a help desk built for online stores, with Shopify orders inside every ticket.
Best for: Shopify stores that answer on email, chat, Instagram, Facebook, SMS and voice from one place.
How it bills: by the ticket, plus each conversation its AI Agent fully resolves. Every AI resolution also counts as a ticket, so it’s billed twice. Pro is $360 a month for 2,000 tickets, and its AI bundle adds $190 for 190 resolutions. Gorgias’s page lists $1.50 for each AI resolution above the bundle in one place and $1.00 on monthly plans in another.
Reference store:
- At $1.50: Pro, $360 + $190 + (500 − 190) × $1.50 = $1,015 a month. On annual billing, $936.
- At $1.00: Basic is cheaper, $60 + $30 for 300 tickets and 30 AI resolutions, plus 700 extra tickets × $0.40 and 470 AI resolutions × $1.00 = $840 a month.
We couldn’t tell from public pages which rate applies, so ask Gorgias before you sign.
AI on orders: the AI Agent can cancel unfulfilled orders, edit a shipping address, remove or replace items with a refund, and reship. The shopper confirms; no teammate approval step is described.
Rating: 4.3 from 706 reviews.
The catch: the most complete Shopify help desk here, and one of the hardest bills to predict.
Tidio
Tidio is a live chat tool with an AI agent called Lyro and a lightweight help desk.
Best for: chat-first stores that want a polished widget and room for 10 teammates.
How it bills: by the conversation a teammate replies in, and separately by every conversation Lyro replies in, whether Lyro solves it or not. Self-serve plans stop at 1,000 Lyro conversations a month.
Reference store: your team replies in 500 conversations, so the 600-conversation Growth tier at $129. Lyro replies in all 1,000, so the 1,000 tier at $700. $829 a month, or about $691 on annual billing. If Lyro only answered the 500 it resolves, its tier would be $350, for $479 in all.
AI on orders: the listing says Lyro handles “order status, refunds, cancellations and order edits” within rules you set. We couldn’t find whether a teammate approves those first.
Rating: 4.8 from 1,356 reviews.
The catch: the reference store sits right at Lyro’s self-serve cap, and the listing says Lyro pauses when you reach it.
Chatty
Chatty is an AI chatbot and live chat app for Shopify, with a simple shared inbox and a FAQ page.
Best for: stores on a tight budget that want AI on chat, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.
How it bills: by AI conversation. Plus is $199 a month for 1,000, and each extra costs $0.40. Conversations your team answers alone are unlimited.
Reference store: Plus covers all 1,000 AI conversations. $199 a month, or $169.99 on annual billing. Pro at $68.99 plus 500 extra × $0.40 would cost more, $268.99.
AI on orders: order tracking, product answers and recommendations. No refunds, cancellations or edits.
Rating: 4.9 from 1,882 reviews, the best-rated tool here with a large number of reviews.
The catch: it’s a chat tool more than a help desk. There are no reply-time targets, saved replies or rules that sort conversations for you.
Re:amaze
Re:amaze is a help desk owned by GoDaddy, with email, chat, social, SMS and voice.
Best for: teams who want the AI to answer questions and prefer to handle orders themselves.
How it bills: per user, plus each AI resolution beyond those included. Basic is $29 per user and includes 5 AI resolutions per user. A resolution is a conversation the AI finishes without a teammate. Each extra costs $0.85.
Reference store: 3 × $29 + (500 − 15) × $0.85 = $87 + $412.25 = $499.25 a month, or $490.55 on annual billing. The flat $59 Starter plan covers 500 answered conversations, but its AI terms aren’t published.
AI on orders: none documented. Teammates can refund, cancel and create Shopify orders from the conversation.
Rating: 4.4 from 181 reviews.
The catch: the AI is still labelled beta, and it answers rather than acts.
Richpanel
Richpanel is a help desk for online stores, with AI agents and a self-service portal.
Best for: stores that want the AI to refund and cancel, with limits on what it may do alone.
How it bills: per seat, plus about $0.20 per conversation the AI handles, with a $200 monthly minimum. The pricing page says $119 per seat on monthly billing and $99 on annual. The App Store listing says $89 per user. The page also mentions AI credits at $0.50 to $0.60 each.
Reference store: 3 × $119 + $200 = $557 a month. At the listing’s $89, it’s $467. Either way the AI comes to about 1,000 × $0.20 = $200, which is also the minimum.
AI on orders: the listing says its agents resolve “order status, returns, refunds, cancellations” end to end, and that you set “refund limits, what needs approval, when to escalate”.
Rating: 4.9 from 137 reviews.
The catch: three official sources give three prices, and AI cost changes with the model and length of each conversation.
eDesk
eDesk is a help desk for sellers on Shopify, Amazon, eBay and hundreds of other marketplaces.
Best for: stores that sell on marketplaces as well as Shopify.
How it bills: per agent, plus $0.99 every time its AI Agent replies to or acts on a ticket, solved or not. Essential is $49 per agent on monthly billing.
Reference store: 3 × $49 + 1,000 × $0.99 = $147 + $990 = $1,137 a month, or $1,107 on annual billing. The App Store listing shows flat plans instead, from $59 a month, so check which applies to you.
AI on orders: procedures you write, step-by-step instructions the AI follows, can approve returns and trigger refunds, but no Shopify cancel action is listed, and no teammate approval step is described.
Rating: 4.7 from 32 reviews.
The catch: you pay for every AI reply, so a store whose AI answers first pays for all 1,000 conversations.
Willdesk
Willdesk is a help desk and AI chatbot from Channelwill, sold through the Shopify App Store.
Best for: owners running several small stores, with a free plan for unlimited teammates.
How it bills: by conversation, plus AI conversations at $20 per 100 on Basic or $200 per 1,000 on Pro.
Reference store: Pro, $89.90 for 1,000 conversations + 1,000 AI conversations × $0.20 = $289.90 a month. Another version of the listing shows Pro at $149.90, which makes it $349.90. The listing doesn’t say how many AI conversations a plan includes, so this is the weakest figure in the table.
AI on orders: order tracking, returns, cancellations and address updates, per the listing. Refunds and approval aren’t mentioned.
Rating: 4.7 from 380 reviews.
The catch: prices shifted between versions of the listing, and some reviewers mention AI fees they didn’t expect.
Help Scout
Help Scout is a help desk with shared inboxes, a help center and AI Answers.
Best for: teams whose support is mostly email.
How it bills: per user, plus $0.75 for each conversation AI Answers resolves. Standard is $25 per user on annual billing. The monthly price isn’t printed; the 16% annual discount the page shows puts it near $29.76.
Reference store: 3 × $25 + 500 × $0.75 = $75 + $375 = $450 a month on annual billing, or about $464 on monthly billing. New accounts get AI Answers free for their first three months.
AI on orders: none. Teammates can edit, cancel and refund Shopify orders from Help Scout.
Rating: 3.7 from 19 reviews.
The catch: its AI answers from your help articles only, and the Shopify app has few reviews.
Zendesk
Zendesk is a customer service suite for larger teams, with voice and more than 1,800 apps.
Best for: fast-growing stores that need phone support or an enterprise plan to grow into.
How it bills: per agent, plus each automated resolution beyond those included. Suite Team is $69 per agent on monthly billing, includes 5 resolutions per agent, and charges $2.00 for each extra, or $1.50 if you commit up front.
Reference store: 3 × $69 + (500 − 15) × $2.00 = $207 + $970 = $1,177 a month. On annual billing with committed resolutions: 3 × $55 + 485 × $1.50 = $892.50.
AI on orders: Zendesk’s auto assist can suggest an order lookup, a cancellation or a refund, and a teammate accepts it before it runs. That needs the Copilot add-on, $50 per agent, on Suite Professional and up, which isn’t in the total above.
Rating: 3.2 from 94 reviews, the lowest here.
The catch: the highest bill for this store, and it isn’t built around Shopify.
Intercom
Intercom is a customer service platform with a help desk and Fin, its AI agent. The company renamed itself Fin in May 2026 and kept Intercom as the help desk’s name.
Best for: stores that support customers by phone, WhatsApp and SMS as well as chat and email.
How it bills: per seat, plus $0.99 per Fin “outcome”. An outcome includes a shopper leaving without asking for more help, and a handoff that runs through a procedure you built.
Reference store: 3 × $39 + 500 × $0.99 = $117 + $495 = $612 a month, or $582 with annual seats. If all 500 handoffs run through a procedure, add 500 × $0.99 for up to $1,107.
AI on orders: Fin can look up order details and, through procedures you set live, refund or cancel. There’s no per-refund approval by a teammate.
Rating: 3.7 from 18 reviews.
The catch: you can pay for an outcome when nothing was solved.
What decides the bill
The paid tools here are up to $1,128 a month apart for the same store, and the plan price explains very little of that. What matters is what each vendor counts:
- Per AI resolution: Re:amaze, Help Scout and Zendesk charge only when the AI finishes a conversation on its own. Gorgias does too, and counts it as a ticket as well.
- Per conversation the AI replies in: Tidio, Chatty, Willdesk and Richpanel charge whenever the AI joins, solved or not. If the AI answers first, that’s every conversation.
- Per AI reply or action: eDesk charges for each ticket its AI replies to. Intercom charges per outcome, which can include a handoff.
- Per AI message, inside a flat price: Rinhelp counts every message Rin sends against 5,000 a month on one plan.
- Per seat on top: Zendesk, Help Scout, Intercom, Re:amaze, Richpanel and eDesk also charge for every teammate, so their bills grow when you hire.
Before you compare quotes, write down three numbers for your own store: teammates, conversations a month, and how many you expect the AI to finish alone. Then ask each vendor which of those it bills for.
Who can touch an order
An AI that says “your order shipped Tuesday” is useful. An AI that refunds $300 to the wrong person is a problem. Here is what each tool’s AI can do with a Shopify order, from vendor docs and listings.
| Tool | Looks up orders | Refunds | Cancels | Who approves |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Inbox | After sign-in | No | No | No actions |
| Rinhelp | After a purchase check | Asks | Asks | A teammate, every time |
| Gorgias | Yes | Within cancel or remove item | Yes | The shopper confirms |
| Tidio | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not described |
| Chatty | Tracking | No | No | No actions |
| Re:amaze | Answers | Teammates only | Teammates only | No AI actions |
| Richpanel | Yes | Yes | Yes | Rules you set |
| eDesk | Yes | Through procedures | Not listed | Not described |
| Willdesk | Tracking | Not stated | Yes | Not described |
| Help Scout | No | Teammates only | Teammates only | No AI actions |
| Zendesk | Suggests | Suggests | Suggests | A teammate accepts |
| Intercom | Yes | Through procedures | Through procedures | Set once, then automatic |
Shoppers want to know why: in Zendesk’s CX Trends 2026 survey, 95% of consumers said they expect an explanation for decisions an AI makes. If you’d rather see more of how AI-first tools compare, read our guide to the best Shopify AI chatbots.
How we checked
We started from the tools that come up most in searches for Shopify Inbox alternatives, kept the ones built for Shopify stores or with a Shopify integration, and left out tools with no public prices (Kustomer) or too little data to price fairly (Crisp, tawk.to).
For each tool we read its own pricing page, its documentation and its Shopify App Store listing on 20 October 2026. Totals use list prices in US dollars on monthly billing, for the cheapest plan that fits the reference store, before tax. Where a vendor’s own pages disagree, we show both figures. App Store ratings come from each listing on the same day. The review trend for Shopify Inbox comes from the 1,990 reviews we collected from its listing, newest first, on 20 October 2026.
Prices change often, so check each figure on the vendor’s page before you decide. If you spot a mistake, email support@rinhelp.com and we’ll correct it.

Questions
Is Shopify Inbox still free?
Yes. Shopify Inbox is free for stores on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, and its AI agent is included. You turn the AI on yourself.
Does Shopify Inbox have AI in 2026?
Yes. Since Shopify’s Spring ’26 Edition, the Inbox agent answers questions about products, shipping, returns and store policies, and checks an order’s status once the shopper signs in. It works only in your store’s chat widget and can’t refund or cancel orders.
Can Shopify Inbox handle my support email?
No. Shopify Inbox is a chat tool. If a shopper leaves the chat, your reply reaches them by email, but emails sent to your support address don’t arrive in Inbox.
Can I use Facebook Messenger or Instagram with Shopify Inbox?
No. Shopify stopped supporting Messenger and Instagram in Inbox in August 2023. Gorgias, Tidio, Chatty, Re:amaze, Richpanel and Willdesk all cover social messages.
What is the cheapest Shopify Inbox alternative with AI?
For our reference store of 3 teammates and 1,000 conversations a month, Rinhelp costs $49 and Chatty $199. Shopify Inbox itself stays free if chat alone is enough.
Which Shopify Inbox alternative lets AI refund or cancel orders?
Gorgias cancels and edits orders once the shopper confirms. Tidio, Richpanel and Intercom can refund through rules or procedures you set up. Rinhelp’s AI asks for the refund or cancellation, and a teammate approves it.
